Walmart purchases online video service Vudu

February 22, 2010

Subpoenas issued in Pennsylvania school webcam investigationIt seems that Walmart is getting into the streaming video business with the announcement that it has purchased the company Vudu.

Walmart has been looking for an online strategy for a few years now, and it appears that it has opted to go with a pre-built one as opposed to building its own according to a story from The New York Times.

Vudu has been around for three years, and while it started operations by building its own set top boxes, it switched over to licensing its software to device manufacturers in 2008. It can now be found in Blu-ray players and televisions from the likes of LG Electronics, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba and Vizio.

No details of the deal were immediately available, and there is no indication of when the deal takes effect, but both companies began notifying Hollywood studios today of the deal.

Now comes the question if this may spur the long rumored Amazon purchase of Netflix into becoming a reality.
