Twitter grows to 600 tweets per second

February 23, 2010

Twitter grows to 600 tweets per second Twitter has begun releasing statistics on how many tweets its users are sending to demonstrate its steady upward growth. Who would have thought that one of their main measures is a TPS report for tweets per second?

That adds up quickly to over 500 million tweets on any given day for the micro blogging service. And that’s with the spam already filtered out.

The real task here isn’t even storing all of those millions of messages every day, but delivering them. If an average user has 100 or so followers, those 50 million tweets equates to 5 billion tweets delivered on any given day.

These numbers represent more than the size and scale of Twitter’s service, they also represent how ingrained in our lives Twitter has become. Even the White House press Secretary has joined Twitter to help keep citizens informed.

Though I still wonder how many of these accounts are robot drones automatically tweeting updates when nobody is actually listening.
