YouTube cutting support for IE6 on March 13th
If you’re still using Internet Explorer 6, and you’re a fan of YouTube and Orkut, you may want to think about upgrading your browser before March 13.
Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) has become one of the key problems for Web developers from being able to move ahead with new features they would like to implement. The problem is that this browser is still prevalent on computers, despite the fact it is nearing being nine years old, a lifetime in Internet terms.
While many people have called for an end to its use, Google is striking a major blow against the legacy browser. Starting March 13, Google properties YouTube and Orkut will end support for the aging browser.
While the sites will still work, new features that roll out will not be compatible due to IE6 not being standards compliant. Between now and the cut off date, users who come to the site while IE6 will be presented with an informational page about why this is happening and giving them links to other Web browsers they may want to try. This list includes:
- Firefox
- Google Chrome
- Internet Explorer
- Opera
- Safari
This is a major move in the unofficial war against IE6. YouTube is one of the most popular destinations on the Internet, and while the Orkut social network may not be that popular in the United States, it is huge in countries such as Brazil and India. With these two sites now trying to educate users on why they should upgrade, this should help move along the adoption process of modern browsers a bit more.
The YouTube information does stress that users who continue to use IE6 will be able to continue watching videos, but new features launched in the coming months will not work for them.
