Virgin Media bringing 100 Mbps Internet connection to UK customersIt seems that 100 Mbps is quickly becoming the new standard Internet speed that everyone longs for, and it isn’t any different in the U.K.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Virgin Media has announced plans to roll out 100 Mbps fiber optic service to 12.6 million homes around the U.K. by early 2011.  Virgin currently services 3.6 million homes, and has hopes that this new service, which is approximately 24 times faster than the average 4.1 Mbps that customers currently receive.

The U.K. government pledged that all citizens would have access to a minimum of 2 Mbps by 2012, and Virgin competitor BT also recently announced it would be rolling out a new service that offers up to 40 Mbps.

Virgin already has an eye towards the future, and has been running a test in Kent since last May that is delivering 200 Mbps.  The test is now being expanded to Coventry, and Virgin says it hopes to expand it out to all customers by 2012.

Wow! Marvelous. When I can taste it. In my country it’s very expensive even to get 1Mbps

Many people in rural and remotes areas of Australia dream of getting ADSL, let alone 1 Mbps.

my dad is on virgin media broadband in a rural part of the UK and he has to switch to his mobile broadband to do any windows updates or other heavy downloading because he gets faster speeds via his O2 3G dongle than with his virgin ADSL and the 3G connection is much more reliable.

virgin keep telling him there is nothing they can do to fix it, so I have no idea how the UK government plan on giving him a minimum of 2mbps when at the moment his speed is only marginally better than it was when he had dialup.
