Upgrading to Android 2.1 may not exactly be a painless experience
If you own an Android phone, we have some good news and some bad news for you … you may want to sit down for this.
The good news is that the Android 2.1 will be rolling out to all the currently released Android phones, but there will be a major issue for some owners out there.
According to AndroidAndMe, the U.S. carriers are currently working with Google to determine which phones will be able to update over the air as opposed to having to be tethered to their PCs when 2.1 starts to be pushed out in the second quarter of the year. While not a major issue, it can be a bit annoying but would help in making sure that you do a backup of your phone before proceeding.
And speaking of backups, that will be essential for some of you. While no official list has been published as of yet, it seems that some phones will require a complete wipe of their memories before you can install the new version of Android. Even after going through all of that, some models still won’t be able to use all of the features of 2.1, such as Live Wallpapers, but you will get the basic features of the latest version of the operating system.
Considering the age of most Android phones, this does seem a bit extreme that we are already at a point where the hardware is obviously not keeping up with the OS. Who knows what will happen with future versions of the software; are G1 owners coming close to an expiration date without realizing it?
