Chatroulette creator starts new cold war between Russia and the United States
Chatroulette has gone from absolutely nothing to a Web phenomenon in the space of a few months. And that means just one thing for its creator: money. The only question is whose money is he going to accept?
Chatroulette is the random video chat site which connects two strangers together for a face to face meeting of the minds. And it’s huge.
When 17-year-old Moscow student Andrey Ternovskiy launched the site last year it was purely for him and his friends. By November it had 500 people a day using it. And now it boasts 1.5 million visitors per day.
This rapid success means the big names are interested in the site and the young man behind it. Google, Union Square Ventures, and Skype are all rumored to be interested in investing or acquiring the concept. But then so is Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian company which has already invested up to $500 million in Facebook.
Spiegel Online tells how Ternovskiy faces a choice between Russian and American money. Either way, money definitely figures in this guy’s future. Not bad for a site which seems to cater mainly for freaks, weirdos, and men sitting around naked.
