Twitter hits 10 billion tweets milestone

Twitter hits 10 billion tweets milestoneIt took a while for Twitter to build up a head of steam. It wasn’t exactly an overnight success. But after hitting the mainstream early last year and getting talked about on the news and chat shows, and gaining multiple celebrity users, Twitter hit the big time. The result = 10 billion tweets.

Twitter launched in 2006 but didn’t really take off in a big way until the end of 2008, the beginning of 2009. Since then, the site has grown in both popularity and stature, and a host of new features have been added (or are on the way) in the hopes of maintaining that momentum.

December 2009 saw Twitter manage 1 billion tweets in a month for the first time in its history. And now, according to Gigatweet, Twitter has passed the 10 billion tweets milestone. Unfortunately, that particular tweet was on a protected profile, meaning we’ll have to content ourselves with the 9,999,999,999th tweet, sent by Rafaela Marques from Brazil. Who, I’m guessing, is about to gain lots of followers.

It took over three years for Twitter to hit 10 billion tweets, but it’s estimated that the next 10 billion will only take 4-5 months, with the 20 billionth tweet scheduled to appear sometime in July. You never know, it could be yours.
