Microsoft sends flowers to Internet Explorer 6 funeral
It seems that even Microsoft can join in the ribbing that is directed at the nine-year-old Internet Explorer 6.
More and more Web sites are saying they will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) because it is simply too old and outdated. The browser is now nine-years-old, and simply doesn’t support all of the current Web standards, but it continues to power nearly 20 percent of all Web traffic due to its continued use in the corporate sector.
According to The Register, this past Friday in Denver, CO, a mock funeral was held for IE6, and it was suggested that the mourners who couldn’t attend in person should send flowers. Well, an expected bouquet arrived … from the current Internet Explorer development team.
The card read:
Thanks for the good times IE6, see you all @ MIX when we show a little piece of IE Heaven – Team @ Microsoft
The upcoming MIX conference is expected to see the unveiling of Internet Explorer 9, but it is unknown at this time what new tweaks have been made to the reining number one browser.
The most recent data on the marketshare each browser enjoys shows that Internet Explorer has lost over six percent of its market share in the past ten months, but it still enjoys a 61.58 percent share of the browser market. The data isn’t broken down by version number so it is unknown how much of that belongs to versions seven and eight of the long running brand from Microsoft.
Hopefully with the release of nine more of IE6′s usage stats will disappear, but that sadly seems unlikely if they haven’t changed by now.

I am sure few who have the option are still running IE6. MS has been pushing IE7 and now IE8 for YEARS via Windows Update. At this point only those who either have no control of their machine’s software load or are just plain dumb are still running IE6. Blame your IT department.

The death of IE6 will only hurt IE overall.

IE6. The last good version of the Internet explorer. The only thing you need the IE for is to download Firefox, but this is over by win7 too.

DavidB – It’s not a ‘blame your IT department’ option. The company I work for still has about half of its 6000 PCs running Windows 2000 so we can’t go higher than IE6 on those. And if you want to give us the money to buy 3000 PCs in one hit, feel free.

IE6 is alive and well (okay, not great, but functional) on about 2,000,000+ Dept of Defense computers. Until someone gets the cajones to verify all the sensitive, proprietary software plays nice with IE8+, there is no one alive willing to risk their government retirement pension on upgrading…
Heaven help them upgrading past WinXP, too!
