Apple iPad ad airs during 2010 Oscars

Apple iPad ad airs during 2010 OscarsThe Academy Awards are as popular as ever, with millions of people staying up late on a Sunday night to see the best of Hollywood rewarded for their efforts of the past 12 months. So what better occasion than the 2010 Oscars to air the first ever Apple iPad advert?

Ever since Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad on Jan. 27 (after months of intense speculation over what new product Apple had up its sleeve), we’ve been waiting for two things – a confirmed release date and the first advert. We’ve now had both of these in the space of a few days.

On Friday, Apple finally revealed when the iPad would be available to buy. The presale will begin on March 12, with Wi-Fi models shipping on April 3. 3G models will follow a few weeks later, around the same time that both models will also be launched in Australia, Canada, Japan, and several European countries.

In the press release accompanying this news, Steve Jobs said of the iPad:

IPad is something completely new. We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.

Fast-forward two days and the first iPad ad was aired during the 2010 Oscars. It’s a simple affair, being just 30 seconds long and eschewing the usual Apple glitz for a clear, concise, and very speedy waltz through the main attractions of the iPad. It’s much nearer to the iPhone ads than the ones for iPod and iTunes.

The ad shows the iPad from multiple angles and being used both horizontally and vertically. It shows off the speed and ease of the touchscreen before racing through the various uses. We get to see Web browsing, iBooks browsing and e-books reading, photo viewing, email, movie watching, and more.

I think it’s a good ad to kick the campaign off with. It shows people unaware or unsure about the device what they’d be getting for their money without blinding them with details. Future ads are likely to focus more on particular elements of the experience, with a voiceover likely to replace the soundtrack. But for now Apple has started simple.
