Tumblr on the rise, eyeing revenue
Tumblr is now three years old, but unlike its similarly-aged sibling Twitter, Tumblr has had a slower, more refined rise in popularity. But it’s definitely getting there, hitting the one billion views milestone in February. Next on the agenda: generating revenue.
Tumblr is a service which sits somewhere in between WordPress and Twitter, with a little bit of Flickr on the side. It offers users the simplest method for blogging about anything in whatever media they choose, be it text, photo, video, a simple link, or more. And it’s addictive once you begin.
Which is why the stats are now starting to rack up very impressively, as announced on the Tumblr staff blog:

However, Tumblr is now facing the same problem as Twitter is: making some money to justify the rounds of investment that have been sunk into the venture over the last couple of years. According to Mashable, next month will see Tumblr launch two new revenue-generating efforts, although details are currently thin on the ground.
Profitable or not, Tumblr is heading upwards very fast, building a momentum that should see it soon entering the mainstream in the same way Twitter managed last year.
