White House using controversial Justin.tv to stream Joe Biden speech from Israel
Justin.tv is one of many ways people, anyone with a camera of any kind, can broadcast life on the Web in a practice that’s come to be known as lifecasting. As popular as it is, I never thought I’d see the White House using the service to stream a speech by Vice President Joe Biden.
However, according to The Hill, that is exactly what is going to happen on Thursday (March 11) when Biden gives a speech from Tel Aviv University. With the official White House television crew being absent from the event, the White House is instead utilizing Justin.tv to stream the speech live on the Web. It will later be posted on the White House Web site.
What’s the big deal, you may ask. Well, Justin.tv is a site with a history of controversy. In 2008, a teenager committed suicide live on the site, using Justin.tv to broadcast his last moments on Earth. More relevantly, Justin.tv is one of the lifecasting services accused of breaking copyright restrictions by allowing people to broadcast pay-per-view sporting events right across the Web.
Maybe Joe Biden will be a little more sympathetic to the site’s position on this after he’s actually used it.
