Twitter unveils @anywhere at SXSWi
As with most Web companies, and social media and social networking sites, Twitter is omnipresent at SXSWi 2010. And it’s used the event to unveil @anywhere, a new integration platform that will mean Twitter will be much more visible across the Web in the future.
Twitter has grown massively over the past year. But at its core it’s still the same basic site that first popped up on the Web in 2007. However, it looks set to evolve and improve over the next few months as the company first looks to increase its visibility across the Web and second tries to bring revenue into the equation.
Twitter CEO Evan Williams was expected to use his keynote speech at SXSWi 2010 to announce plans to monetize the site. But that never materialized. Instead, he announced and briefly demoed @anywhere. Which could eventually lead on to a monetization of the site but for now is merely a new platform to expand Twitter’s reach across the Web.
@anywhere is a new framework which will enable Twitter to be integrated into sites across the Web. Any site using @anywhere will integrate Twitter so that people and brands mentioned on the site will link to their Twitter accounts and publishers themselves will have a closer relationship and integration with Twitter.
Sites on board from launch include Amazon, AdAge, Bing, Digg, eBay, The Huffington Post, The New York Times, Yahoo!, and YouTube. Twitter.com/anywhere is already in place and being updated, and will likely be the place to watch for future announcements as to when @anywhere will be rolled out.
This is likely just the first part of a plan to evolve Twitter into something new, something more essential to the way the Web works, and something which can turn a profit. Whether @anywhere will be successful at delivering on those three aims remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds like a good start to the next phase for the company and the site.
