New site merges Facebook and Chatroulette
Aping one buzzworthy Web site is plagiarism, but aping two is creative. Or at least that seems to be the logic behind Faceroulette.
Following on from the students-only Chatroulette clone RandomDorm, Faceroulette uses the same technical idea as Chatroulette, but limits it to Facebook members. Whenever you are connected to a new chat partner, you see their first name, profile pic, age and country.
The main advantage of the site is that the people you are connected with aren’t anonymous and are thus much less likely to be random crazed loons, drunks or perverts. The main disadvantage of the site is that the people you are connected with aren’t anonymous and are thus much less likely to be random crazed loons, drunks or perverts.
There’s also the potential benefit that if you strike up a connection with a chat partner, you can then easily add them as a friend on Facebook. Whether that’s an advantage depends on how you use Facebook: I only add people I know in “real life”, but certainly many use it to acquire as many online “friends” as possible.

This site rocks! It’s way better compared to CR, i’ve been on CR for 10 minutes and saw enough for the rest of my life… On FR it’s far more realistic to meet real new people!

Doesn’t this directly contradict the anti-RandomDorm angle from the other post? Faceroulette seems cool though

This site is a good idea, in theory, but almost nobody will check out this site. It will probably never have enough critical mass because people want excitement of seeing interesting stuff from time to time. This site just doesn’t have that excitement, and unfortunately, 90% of internet users want that. My prediction: this “safe” version of Chatroulette will be extinct after it realizes that it has a huge uphill battle. Sorry.
