4chan worth just $45,000 at last count
You’d think 4chan would be making money and be worth an absolute fortune to its founder Christopher ‘Moot’ Poole. But it’s not. In fact, the largest active forum in the U.S. just about breaks even and the most that Moot has ever been offered for the site was $45,000.
If you’re not aware of 4chan then you may want to keep it that way. Unless you are very broad-minded and have a strong stomach. 4chan is a message board of colossal proportions with a membership with a mind of its own.
Its founder, Christopher Poole, recently gave an interesting interview to the New York Times. The most interesting part of which is when ‘Moot’ talks about selling the site. He claims:
When I was 17 years old I was approached by an online Japanese toy store and they offered me $15,000 for the Web site, I told them I wasn’t interested in selling so they bumped the price up to $45,000. I said No. I haven’t received another offer in the past 5 years.
This despite 4chan boasting 8.2 million unique visitors and 600 million page loads per month. Still, with content of that nature, it’s no surprise that advertisers aren’t exactly queuing around the block.
And in case you’re wondering (and have a fair few thousand dollars in the bank), ‘Moot’ would consider selling the site now but only if the buyer was “committed to the site and its goals.” Which, as far as I can tell, are total carnage and utter mayhem.

I would of thought he’d still find a way to monetize the visitors…

He means keeping it open so anyone can post anything within the desired boards, and not bogging us down with massive ads which many failed boards have done.

I’m glad moot isn’t selling the site. I don’t want to see it turn into some stupid imageboard with banner ads and spam everywhere…oh wait a moment…
