What does your wireless network name say about you?
An Australian man has published a list of 2000 wireless network addresses from his area. It gives an intriguing insight into the lives and moods of Wi-Fi users.
Michael Smith of Melbourne collects the list using a scanner on his tram journey to and from work which then publishes the list online. The most popular names are, predictably, router default network IDs such as NETGEAR and DLINK, which are probably the safest bet for any hackers who want to try default passwords as well.
But its the individual IDs which are more telling. For example, is we_buy_gold the work of somebody who has opted to give up their bling rather than their net access, or just the victim of a memorable advertising campaign.
Would you rather spend time at a party talking to the person behind sweatlungs or superfriends? Does royorbison or ringo download more mp3s?
What is on the other side of the rabbit hole? Should we fear Internet Death Virus? Is high speed internet still a dream for slowpieceofcrap? And should we challenge HACKMEBITCH?
Should we be concerned by the presence of invisiblegovernment? Why does internethater need WiFi? What happened to the predecessor of indoor plant the first? Is it true that Paul’s Face Is A Network?
Is We love sexy men satisfied by the internet’s offerings? What about SMUT_NET? Is there any relationship between Joffly The Hot Guyz, Gay sex for me ;-) and Beefy Goes Broadband? And is it *that* famous Aussie who opted for sugar tits?
And is there anything more shocking than the fact that only a solitary net user opted for a simple fuckyou?
Well, that and the fact that the list doesn’t appear to include any subtle messages to neighbors along the lines of these examples.
