Skype boasts 560 million registered users
We all know Facebook is popular, having, as it does, more than 400 million registered users. But Skype is even more popular than the social networking site, now boasting 560 million users. And it’s still growing at a monumental rate.
At the eComm conference in San Francisco, Skype’s CTO Jonathan Rosenberg offered up some interesting statistics which show just how popular and important Skype now is.
According to GigaOM, Skype ended 2009 with 560 registered million users, 160 million more than Facebook. It reached this total by adding 39 million in Q4 2009 alone. Since the service first launched, Skype-to-Skype calls have totaled 250 billion minutes, with 36.1 billion of those being added in Q4 2009.
For 2009 as a whole, Skype accounted for a massive 12 percent of all international calling minutes, a 50 percent increase from 2008. Which has got to be a worry for phone companies around the world.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Skype’s user numbers continue to increase at this rate. And if they do, it will only be a few years until it hits the one billion user milestone. Which would be an astounding achievement.
