Google inching closer to launching Google TV
If all goes according to the current plans, Google may be taking some of the wraps off of its Google TV project later this month.
According to The Wall Street Journal, sources are claiming that Google may present the new venture to developers at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco on May 19 and 20. The reason being is that since the system will be Android-based, the company will want the developers to be getting to work on applications as soon as possible. The announcement may get delayed for any number of reasons, but that is the plan as it stands at this moment.
As we mentioned back in March, the plans for the Google TV system include partnerships with Intel for the chips, Sony for embedding it in hardware and Logitech for building a remote with mini keyboard. The current idea is that Sony will play some version of Intel’s Atom processor in devices to run Android, and that may be the most important factor right now as developers will have no interest in working on developing applications if there is no place for users to take advantage of them.
There is no word when consumers may see this, but this could be a definite factor in seeing more people cutting their ties to cable and satellite providers. Depending on how much Internet video content gets put into this system, you could potentially see people buying TVs based on this, and once you add in something like a Roku box to stream Netflix and Amazon, who would need cable any more?
