Cell phone users using more data than phone

May 14, 2010

Even though a lot of people worldwide are giving up their land lines in favor of a cellular-only lifestyle, the cell talk minutes used has stagnated, though the data uses of cell phones continues to grow at a rapid rate.

More and more cell phone users are talking less and less, though they are still making use of their phones at an increasing rate. According to  a New York Times story, the talk-time rates are decreasing and the data usage is increasing so fast that cellular service providers may soon begin to figure cell phone rates more based more on data that voice usage. Although I am rarely trendy, I fit this latest cell phone user profile. I spend very little time talking on my iPhone and a large amount of time using it as a very small mobile computer. From email to grocery lists to checking the weather, I have the phone out of my pocket almost all of the time, though I rarely use it as a telephone. I can hardly wait for the data bills to rise.
