3DTV without need for glasses on way

May 30, 2010

Buying a 3DTV is a pretty pointless and expensive exercise right now. Especially as there’s something even better just around the corner.

Anyone who buys a 3DTV between now and 2015 is likely to regret it, because that is when 3D television sets which don’t require the use of special glasses to watch any content will start to appear.

I’ve already asked whether we actually want or need 3DTV and branded any early adopters of the technology truly dumb people with very deep pockets. And now there’s another reason to believe this is so.

According to Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (via Computerworld), 3DTVs which display 3D without the need for the viewer to wear polarized glasses will hit the global market by 2015. As well as ITRI, Sharp and Hitachi are also working on the technology, and it’s fully expected to be available on large screens in the next few years.

I was already going to wait, at least until there was more content than just Avatar to watch, but this has made me even more determined to resist the urge to go 3D. I’m sure we’ll all have 3DTVs by 2020, but for now, I don’t see the point.

I hope they manage to get them mainstream long before that point. I’ll be 31 and an old man by that point in time… Seriously 5 years should be well long enough to get them out there!

Dave – Using that logic, I’ll bet (if you were as unfortunately old as I am) that you would have waited for HDTV to come out before you bought your first color TV (ha,ha). Where’s your sense of techno adventure, man?
