Twitter eyeing ‘Promoted Trends’ advertising effort
Twitter has decided that 2010 is the year it’s going to start making money; serious money. As well as tweets, trending topics are also being targeted.
Twitter’s ‘Promoted Tweets’ ad platform allows advertisers to insert ads into users Twitter feeds. This is almost guaranteed to be a money spinner for the site, but it’ll have to be careful it doesn’t go overboard.
However, according to MediaMemo, advertisers will soon also be able to buy space in the ‘Trending Topics’ area of Twitter. This space is reserved for tracking the topics which are seeing the most discussion on the site, but for the right price, it’s thought Twitter will be up for some ‘Promoted Trends’ as well.
The effort is still at an early stage, and remains vague at this point. But sources with knowledge of the platform claim it will costs a company “tens of thousands of dollars” to buy a place on the site for a day.
Again, Twitter risks ruining the site if it lets the pursuit of profit interfere with the organic nature of the social network.
