Amazon unhappy USPS stopping saturday deliveries

June 25, 2010

Amazon could seek alternative carriers if the USPS’s plans to end Saturday deliveries go through.

The U.S. Postal Service needs to change its business in order to stop losing money. One of the ways to do this would be to stop all Saturday deliveries across the country. However, that would seriously affect the growing number of retailers which operate on the Web and rely on the USPS to deliver good to their customers.

The largest of those online retailers, Amazon, has officially opposed the plans, with TechFlash reporting how Amazon Vice President for Global Public Policy Paul Misener gave a statement to the Senate’s Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. In it he said:

Amazon’s customers have come to appreciate and expect Saturday delivery. While they may be willing to wait until Monday or Tuesday for a bill they don’t really want; an advertisement they didn’t ask for; or a magazine to which they subscribed long ago; they expect the items they purchased this week to be delivered as soon as possible.

He also stated that Amazon would, in the event of Saturday deliveries being stopped, shift around a sixth of its business to other carriers. Which would harm the USPS in the long term.

It’s ridiculous of Amazon to threaten USPS because they are considering the halt of saturday delivery in order to save their company money to reduce their deficit. If Amazon was so far in debt would they not do anything to cut costs or would they continue to waste?USPS is the ONLY delivery service that still operates on saturdays,so your threat to take business away from them for a delivery service that already DOESN’T delivery on saturdays is silly.

Ever ask yourself why Amazon is doing this? Its fair because sunday is already a no service day. Putting two days in a row, this will increase some shippments by 3 days. People shop online because Amazon is good at quick shipping. If people have to wait longer to get online orders, this put e-commerce in danger, not just Amazon. Amazon just has the most profit to lose because they are the largest.
