Report: Apple sold 1.5 million iPhone 4 units the first day

Report: Apple sold 1.5 million iPhone 4 units the first dayIt seems that Apple had a heck of a good day yesterday, and if the projections are correct, it could be the biggest launch day in iPhone history.

As lines popped up all over the world for the launch of the iPhone 4, projections were showing the phone would probably top one million units sold the first day.  A hefty number to be sure, but is it possible the final number was closer to 1.5 million?

According to Fortune, Yair Reiner of Oppenheimer sent out a note to clients on Friday that indicated his belief that Apple sold 1.5 million iPhone 4 handsets the first day, or more than one and a half times what the iPhone 3G S sold in its first three days last year.  How many units Apple will sell from here on out is anyone’s guess, and it totally depends on how many the company has left in the supply chain.  However, there are reports from AT&T that say its retail stores will have no units for walk-in sales until at least Tuesday, June 29 at the earliest, implying that these is a distinct shortage of the phone.

The bigger question mark is how the now confirmed reports of reception issues will impact sales of the phone.  Apple has already had its share of headaches with AT&T and dropped calls, and now it appears you have to hold the newly redesigned phone in a certain way that to make sure you don’t interfere with your reception.  Customers are probably not going to be any too pleased by this idea, and it could have a definite impact on follow-up sales.

Apple is still probably going to have a hit on its hands, just adding to its growing stock value, but you do wonder if the company will ever get a product out without at least a few issues.
