HDMI may already be a thing of the past
All of those HDMI cables you’ve purchased for your Blu-ray players, gaming systems and other assorted devices may already be a thing of the past thanks to a new cable technology that is one we are already familiar with.
HDMI has become the cable standard for connecting devices to TVs over the past few years, but due to pricing and length limitations it has not exactly been a favorite of manufacturers or consumers. To come up with a more efficient system, Valens, LG, Samsung and Sony teamed up to work on an entirely new cabling system named HDBaseT.
The new system uses existing Cat5 Ethernet cables to not only transfer data as they have traditionally been used, but also to pass along audio & video signals, transfering information at 10.2 Gbps with scaling up to 20 Gbps (HDMI is currently at 10.2), can transfer up to 100 watts of power and it can run up to 100 meters in length with an option for daisy chaining connections. And best of it all? RJ45/Cat5 cabling is dirt cheap and available just about anywhere electronics are sold.
The first television sets and components using the new technology are expected to hit by the end of this year, but the massive push of the technology won’t happen until some time in 2011. With so many big name companies backing up the new format, it should find no trouble in finding people to adopt it.

Amazing..a 21st Century 8Track player! When the technology for your cable company that allows your new “free” cable box to fit your new HDTV, many of which do not include the cable, finally gets down to a price that some are lucky enough to afford, that cable connection that you have to buy is already obsolete. Yeah…see the Aquous (?)commercial with George Takei wowing a 3/4″ wide flat screen. That’s the reason why you can now get a 32″ HDTV for < $400. I think I might know 1 or 2 people who can afford the latest TV and I might know 6 or 7 than can buy the 32" and the cable, maybe?? Royalties????..and we were worried about what sandwich spread we could buy this week!!! This planet is moving too fast for me…and that's not a good thing. Please, can let me off at the next stop?
