Spotify now available to Linux users

July 12, 2010

The divine music streaming service Spotify is now available on the divine open source operating system Linux. Good times.

In a blog post, Spotify has announced that a preview version of Spotify for Linux is now available to download. Built by Spotify’s developers “during hack days and late nights,” Spotify for Linux is very close to the Windows and Mac OS X versions. Unfortunately, there are a couple of caveats.

Firstly, Spotify for Linux doesn’t currently support local files as the latest versions of the desktop client for PC and Mac do. This is reportedly due to “issues regarding decoding.” Secondly, as ads aren’t displayed on Spotify for Linux, it’s currently only available to Spotify Premium subscribers.

So, not perfect, but something is better than nothing, right?

Surely a U.S. launch is next on Spotify’s agenda. As someone with more online friends from the U.S. than anywhere else, I want to be able to share my music loves with them. And I can’t do so easily until Spotify pulls its finger out.
