Reddit goes freemium in order to expand
Reddit’s pledge drive looks to have been a hit so far, which means the subscription service Reddit Gold is likely to grow from this day forth.
At the end of last week, Reddit put out the call for donations on its blog. The problem is that while the site is owned by Conde Nast, the company has a particular budget for the site and isn’t deviating from it. But Reddit wants to grow, with more servers, more engineers, and more staff.
So it asked for donations, with the reward being membership of Reddit Gold. 6,000 people have already donated, this despite the actual benefits of Reddit Gold being almost non-existent at this point.
However, Reddit is now promising to up the ante, providing Reddit Gold members with legitimate reasons to subscribe. Meanwhile, Reddit has received its injection of cash and its staff “a good kick in the pants.” Which I’m guessing is a good thing.
