FaceTime said to be coming to iPad and iPod Touch units

Sports Illustrated updates iPad issue after publicationDespite its problems with antenna reception problems, one of the things people have gotten excited about in the iPhone 4 is the FaceTime application. What do you think will happen when Apple brings that same feature to more devices?

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs first mentioned FaceTime at the unveiling of the iPhone 4, he made mention of this being the first iOS device to have the Wi-Fi only video conferencing tool.  A lot of people assumed this meant it would come to other Apple devices running the operating system, but the big question was how the calls would work as the iPhone calls, despite being Wi-Fi only, still involved the use of a phone number.

According to information learned by well-known gadget blog Boy Genius Report, Apple is indeed bringing FaceTime to the iPod Touch and iPad, and that the solution of phone number will be solved by knowing a user’s e-mail address.

While all of this is interesting, the more fascinating bit is that both of these devices currently lack cameras, so if FaceTime truly is coming to these devices, that means they are both receiving at least a back camera if not a front facing camera also.  We should learn about the iPod Touch in September, but the iPad probably won’t receive an update until some time after the first of the year.

If this truly is happening, you almost have to wonder if you will even need to make a regular phone call ever again.
