Microsoft giving all employees a free Windows Phone 7 handset

July 22, 2010

Microsoft has committed to giving each and every one of its 90,000 employees around the world a Windows Phone 7 handset. Which is nice.

According to Mary Jo Foley, re-tweeting a Microsoft employee, Microsoft has homes for the first 90,000 of its Windows Phone 7 handsets, with all employees of the Redmond-based company receiving one.

Windows Phone 7 has received a cautiously positive response from most quarters, although some are sure it will fail in an even bigger way than past Windows Mobile efforts.

Even if it does receive good reviews upon release, that’s no guarantee it will sell well. Hopefully it’ll sell more than the Kin handsets did though, surely it cannot do any worse.

Giving away the first 90,000 handsets is a step in the right direction, although it will end up costing the company money (around $2-$4 million according to estimates). However, should those 90,000 employees love it and tell their family and friends about how good Windows Phone 7 is, that could start some sort of chain reaction.
