BBC iPhone, iPad news app launches
The BBC News app for iPhone and iPad is now available to download after objections from the NPA were rejected out of hand.
In February, the BBC announced plans to release a BBC News app for smartphones and mobile devices. In March, the app, along with a sports app and an iPlayer app, were indefinitely delayed after the Newspaper Publishers Association (NPA) complained to the BBC Trust that the apps were unfair to commercial rivals.
However, the BBC Trust gave the apps the go-ahead, stating that they do not “represent a significant change to the BBC’s existing public services.” In essence, the apps are justified as they are just an extension of what the BBC is already offering, merely changing with the times.
The BBC News app launched in the U.K. today for the Apple iPhone and iPad. The sport and iPlayer apps will follow shortly, with versions for other smartphone platforms including BlackBerry and Android due in the coming months.
