Digg cuts off user registrations
The overhaul of the once monstrous Digg is drawing very close, and it appears the company is about to take the wraps off of it for the general masses.
The relaunch of Digg with a redesigned interface and new functionality has been an on again, off again roller coaster ride for some time now. As we reported last month, some people received invites to have a look at the new version, but even that was riddled with problems for the first day. Considering how long this new version was in development, it started to feel like it might not ever become a reality, but things definitely seem to be moving towards an official launch.
Anyone interested in signing up for the site at digg.com/register will discover that registrations are currently closed (and a picture of a winged unicorn for some odd reason), and you can only sign up for e-mail notifications of when the new site is ready for new members. This definitely suggests that a data migration is under way to the new version and this will allow them to not worry about any new members being left behind when the move is over.
Digg has a lot riding on this relaunch. While it was once considered the kind of the social bookmarking sites, its star status amongst the blogosphere has been on the decline over the past year or two mainly due to the rise of Twitter and Facebook becoming the new favorite ways to share information around the Web. If a redesign of the appearance, and a retooling of how the voting works will be the site’s saving graces remains to be seen.
