M-Dress is a little black (phone) number
We’ve all heard of a little black number that women are advised to keep in their wardrobes at all times. But how about a little black number which has mobile phone technology built into it? Clever, or just plain potty?
With most people in the world now owning some kind of mobile phone, the technology is starting to be built in to other products. But I wouldn’t have thought a ladies dress would be the first or most obvious choice. And yet a dress which incorporates mobile phone technology is exactly what has been developed.
It’s called the M-Dress, and it’s been designed by CuteCircuit, a London-based fashion company. CuteCircuit is best known for incorporating lights into outfits, but this is the company’s first attempt at doing the same with the mobile phone technology required to make and receive calls.
The dress itself is a dark, textured, tight-fitting outfit. But what marks it out as different is the mobile technology running through it.
There’s a tiny antenna stitched in and around the bottom hemline (so positioned to reduce the amount of radiation affecting the wearer), a slot for the SIM card hidden under the label. As for the battery or the circuitry, that appears to be a mystery, at least until someone rips one of the dresses apart to find out how it all works.
The company states:
Very often phone calls are missed because mobile phones are quite awkward to carry, especially for women, that have garments with small or no pockets. To allow women to stay connected while remaining stylish, CuteCircuit designed the M-Dress. A mobile phone in its own right but built out of soft circuitry.
Phone calls are answered by a bend of the arm, with the wearer notified by the dress actually ringing. What happens when you bend your arm for some other reason is unclear. Only two numbers can be stored for outgoing calls as well, meaning some people’s list of friends are going to require some serious cutting down. Then there’s the problem of watching the dress … your guess is as good as mine.
The M-Dress is going to be available to buy sometime in 2011, but no pricing has yet been revealed. It could cost as little as $10 and I would still struggle to see the point of it all.
