Jobs introduce Apple’s new social media service – Ping Recently, Steve Jobs introduced a brand new social media service that fuses with the iTunes store. Its something that hasn’t been done before but still seems all too familiar.

Apple has been rather bullish when it comes to its new social media service, Ping. According to Computer World, Jobs even went on to call Ping a “social music discovery” while exhaustively presenting the service.  Apparently the service lets users follow their favorite artists and friends.

Jobs stated:

You can follow people and you can be followed… Most artists will hold their hand up and say, ‘You can follow me’; you can hold your hand up and say that as well, or you can say, ‘People can follow me, but I have to approve who follows me.’

Since Ping ties in with the iTunes store, the concept is that users can sample an artist’s music and talk about it with other users. Apple believes that users have more to talk about when it comes to music, compared to miscellaneous topics like “breakfast.”

It all sounds interesting and seems to be more of a marketing vehicle for artist than anything else. Time will tell if Ping can stand next to other social media giants like Facebook and Twitter.
