Twitter stats show mobile apps boost

September 7, 2010

Twitter is growing daily, and this is partly due to the official Twitter apps now available on pretty much every mobile platform.

Social networking sites are always keen to brag about the numbers of users they have and how these users access and interact with the site. It’s to be expected, of course, because social networks live and die by the number of people they entice to regularly use them. Which is why Facebook (500 million users and growing) is everywhere right now, while MySpace (66 million users and falling) has virtually disappeared off the radar.

Then there is Twitter, which is growing at an astonishing rate thanks to its popularity with celebrities and media organizations. And, as a recent blog post by CEO Evan Williams states, use of the official mobile apps increasing considerably over the past few months.

First things first, Twitter now has more than 145 million registered users. Which is quite an achievement for a service many people still don’t understand or see the need for. But how do those 145 million people access the site?

A whopping 78 percent still use the (sometimes) trusty Twitter homepage. Which, as PC World points out, is rather disappointing seeing as there are so many issues that could and should be fixed on the Twitter homepage. If 78 percent of all users still use it, why is Twitter not doing much more to improve the experience?

The main gist of Williams post, however, is how successful the mobile apps have been. Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for BlackBerry are very popular, accounting for 8 percent and 7 percent of all visits in the last 30 days respectively. Twitter for Android doesn’t even make the top ten. Overall, mobile users have increased 62 percent since the middle of April, with 16 percent of new users now starting their use of the site via a mobile device.

Mobile devices are the natural home for Twitter users, with the 140-character limit and the mainly one-way nature of the conversation being a perfect fit for the medium. But I still use the website, and the website still sucks.
