Data security in The Cloud lax, as witness Sony PSN hack

April 28, 2011

Every time one turns around, one is confronted with another situation in which hackers have broken into a major network and compromised the privacy of it users. When will The Cloud shape up?

It is not exactly a commercial bank, but Sony is still a big techno logically inclined company and one expects the best in security from them, even when the subject is the PlayStation Network (PSN). So when the PSN is hacked and the information for 75 million users is compromised, it is still a Big Deal. Coming on the back of the huge Epsilon email address hack, one cannot help but pay attention to the truly lousy levels of security that prevail in The Cloud. Worse, according to CNET, companies like Sony are notoriously slow to admit such breaches and law enforcement is ridiculously slow to apprehend hackers.

Yet, seemingly everyone in the tech arena is keen to have us store all of our data in The Cloud, which seems downright stupid given that the people that own all that skyward storage space have proven again and again that they haven’t a clue how to protect information once it is there. It as been said, more than once, that both hackers and government agents want all of our data in The Cloud, simply because it is easier for them to get at your information there. One supposes, of course, that both groups could buy most of it from anti-privacy czar Mark Zuckerberg, in any case, if hacking and spying are too much work.

To be honest, it seems as if local storage is a great deal safer, as well as a great deal more reliable than the  rapidly-becoming infamous Cloud. Outages for Cloud data are almost as frequent as hacks of the information with which Cloud providers have been entrusted. If it is impossible to guard our data in the Cloud, then I vote not to put it there.

How about you?

Bla Bla Bla. So some one hacked Sony and 77 million users details stolen. So what!!!!! Who cares. This is so common place it’s ridiculous. We know nothing is safe online so why the surprise? We know the Chinese have a huge hacker army going about this 24/7. So? If you want to do something go ahead.Me I don’t give a Sh$$$t any more. The warnings have been out their long enough. Just like every other catastrophe in the world. We will only wake up when the damage is done. Don’t waste your money on these corporations. Losers. No dealing with them on line won’t help either cause they keep your details in their online data base anyway.

    So where to from here?
