Now who’s biggest? Apple blows by HP
Whoa, nelly. Previously, analysts predicted that Apple’s Mac + iPad computers sales would make it the world’s largest “PC” vendor sometime within the first six months of 2012. So much for those rosy expectations — who thought that the Cupertino, California company would double tablet sales last quarter.
Yesterday, Apple reported its best ever quarterly results, which is pretty much what they do every quarter. In doing so, the company sold 5.2 million Macs and 15.43 million iPads for a total of 20.6 million, which is more than any other company on the planet.
The salt in the wound here is that Apple would still be the world’s biggest computer maker if one only considered iPad sales — HP managed just 14.7 million units last quarter, according to Gartner estimates.
The magnitude of Hewlett-Packard’s webOS TouchPad failure is only now becoming clear. Whereas it’s easy to put a price on that series of discreet events — about $3.3 billion — the long-term impact isn’t about the money lost, but rather the opportunity missed.
Of course, some might like to aver that it’s not the size of the boat, but rather the motion in the ocean that counts most. Here again, Apple rocks like no one else, delivering $13 billion in profit last quarter with $97.6 billion in cash and short-term investments.
Yes, pretty much everyone predicted iPad sales would soar, but almost no one said the total would go so high. Apple’s already bigger than Microsoft and it’s bigger than HP, which makes me wonder if Cupertino can eclipse the entire Windows PC ecosystem.
There’s a virus free, “it just works” goal worth shooting for…
What’s your take?

Maybe this will convince corporations to let more workers use Macs and iPads! Haha I have no problem with HP, but its the fact that corporations like to keep the oldest versions of an operating system on the PCs. Here’s to hoping!
