While there’s not much difference on the surface, the White House’s content management system has moved to the open source Drupal platform. It may not lower unemployment or strengthen the economy, but it’s still change that geeks can believe in.

The upstart search engine Wolfram Alpha released it’s also-ran iPhone search application to be had for the unbelievable price of 50 bucks on iTunes. Maybe the new kid on the search engine block doesn’t realize that people don’t pay for search, advertisers do.

During Google’s third quarter earnings call, executives repeatedly touted increases in mobile searches as a new market opportunity for the company. And with 12 Android phones coming to 32 carriers in 26 countries, that market is about to explode.

Most in-home streaming music devices work with the iPhone by means of a dock, making it impossible to do anything else while you’re jamming out. The Zoneplayer S5, on the other hand, has an iPhone app that turns your phone into a remote control.

Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Edition will begin shipping on new PCs with an ad-supported revenue model until a user buys a key to the full version. This new strategy offers the limited functionality of Works with the annoyance of ad interruptions.

There’s a rumor afoot that Twitter is talking to both Microsoft and Google about licensing the full Twitter feed for real-time search. If so, it could mean that the company starts making money without having to sacrifice the user experience.

Bing Engineers are willing to do whatever it takes to steal market share away from Google, even if it means copying features. So Microsoft teamed up with TellMe to create a Bing voice search feature for a new Sprint phone.

It’s been a long time coming, but Adobe has announced that it’s bringing full Flash capabilities to handsets from RIM, Windows Mobile, Android and Palm. The only major smartphone being left behind the pack is the Apple iPhone.

Apple bought mapping API company called PlaceBase back in July that allows developers to embed maps in a site using JavaScript, though no one heard a peep about it. It sounds like Steve Jobs is looking to take a bite out of Google Maps.

Amazon partnered with Princeton to provide 50 free Kindle DX e-readers to students at the University. However some students found the Kindle so difficult to use that they would rather go back to lugging around textbooks.
