AT&T and Verizon do some trading

phoneFollowing the purchase of Alltel, it was no secret that Verizon would have to unload some of its new properties in order to keep things legal. Now AT&T – just as expected  – has offered take some of that additional property off Verizon’s hands to the tune of several million dollars. The end result of the deal is that the two wireless companies essentially swap properties, with a little cash thrown into the mix.

Having a broadband cap, or metered broadband would mean that rather than just paying one price for unlimited use of the Internet, you would instead pay for the amount of Internet you use (similar to your electric bill), or you would be limited to using a certain amount of bandwidth each month.

mountainsOn September 24, 2006 a two-passenger plane carrying Marcy Randolph and William Westover disappeared which the two were on a sightseeing trip in Arizona. After searching for two and a half years the wreckage of the plane was finally found, with the help of Google Earth.

craigLast Thursday Philip Markoff was arrested for killing a woman he met through the popular classifieds site Craigslist. Boston police suspect Markoff was meeting women through the site in order to rob them and collect money to pay off a large gambling debt. In the wake of the arrest, the founders of Craigslist, Craig Newmark and Jim Buckmaster, were interviewed by ABC’s Nightline on their thoughts on the entire situation and how it will affect Craigslist.

The comic strip inspired typeface quickly found its way onto signs, school papers, and restaurant menus and has become a pretty common typeface to see almost everywhere. Close to a decade ago a group started with the sole mission of banning the typeface, and now thanks to the Internet they are growing stronger.

You know, one of those things where a phrase or word are written out in what appears to be handwriting and you have to type the word that you see written into a box in order to move on in filling out a form, making a purchase, or signing up for something? The idea behind a captcha is that they make sure there is actually a real person trying to do whatever it is you’re doing rather than an automated computer system. It turns out automated computer systems have started to catch up with the traditional captcha method, so now Google has come up with a new method to keep out the computers.

A book’s ranking is determined by how many overall copies it has sold, and the more popular a book is, the more likely it will be to sell more copies. Recently, Amazon has decided to stop ranking titles that are categorized as “adult” titles, which includes a substantial amount of gay and lesbian books that are not adult in nature.

diggLast week the social news site Digg released a DiggBar tool that gives users a new way to use Digg. At first glance the service seems to be a win for everyone, the tool bar lets makes it easy to Digg Web pages, and allows users browse new content quickly, theoretically driving more traffic to Web sites that people find popular. Many Web publishers however aren’t very happy with the service, so much so in fact that they’ve decided to block it from being used on their sites.
