Today Asustek plans to showcase a new ultra-thin Eee PC at the CeBIT show in Germany, which opens today and runs until Sunday. Called the Eee 1008HA Shell, it is said to be so slim that if you look at it sideways it disappears.

Internode, an Internet Service Provider, in Australia will be offer 100mbps Fiber-to-the-Home Service. Prices will start from $32 for 25mbps and be offered in 50mbps and 100mbps, retailing for under US$64.

Revolutionary solar panels are taking the concept of cheap green electricity one step further. An Australian printing firm will soon begin trials of the ultra-cheap panels made from plastic cells and printed like banknotes.

Skype can seriously damage your business. This week we had our connection cut to a crawl. There are three of us wired into the network and when the telephone supplier applied the cap we simply could not work. At all. The lines were too slow.

Sol Trujillo, controversial head of Australian telephone provider, Telstra, has had his pocket picked. Worse still a mobile phone, probably the same as that illustrated, loaded with top-secret software was nicked at the same time.

China wages war on pornographic sites. And it works well. Now the war is being extended. No pornographic phone calls. And other bans which may surprise you. One has to be a bit careful here not to stir up a hornet’s nest but if you buy a secondhand book with China in the title you cannot have it delivered in China. There has to be a third party. None of this affects 99.9999 percent of the population but that does not mean it is not there.

4G was to be the big future change in telecoms. It meant the possibility of a major sales bonanza and, more importantly, it gave every major one of Europe’s leading mobile phone operators to get back into the picture with the company of its choice.

The simplest statement with which to sum up the Barcelona mobile conference is to say The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are abroad in the land. You can almost hear the beating of their hooves. The report that Nokia has said it expects a 10% fall in mobile sales in the coming year. Nokia itself saw its sales fall by 15% from 2007 to 2008, with the fifth largest manufacturer Motorola suffering a 53% drop during the same period.

Skype now has the new Skype, version 4.0. It has just been tested here in Australia more times that can be counted. This time, Skype has done it right: concentrated on solid performance improvements that make this online phone service really sing. It has been tested from this and several nearby offices and it works like a dream

Samsung has pulled not its much-expected new Android phone from the Mobile World Congress which opens in Barcelona today. It was never there. Either the company misspoke or we misunderstood.

The Mobile Data Association shows that Britain’s love affair with text messages is still going strong; nearly 400 million text messages were sent on the 31st of December 2008, which is a 37 percent growth year-on-year.

Blackberry seems to still be the favored form of communication for high fliers. A survey of 16 chief executive officers of major companies, all seriously successful business travelers, showed the Blackberry was the favorite means of communication and also the favorite gadget.
