A top Symantec executive has hit out at free antivirus software, including Microsoft’s Microsoft Security Essentials, warning consumers that it won’t be enough to keep them safe.

Almost everyone with a Windows PC suffers slow down after a certain amount of time. It’s one of the most frustrating things about running a PC with Windows, and when I received a review copy of TuneUp Utilities 2009 I happened to have two PCs – an older desktop and a more modern notebook* – that were both starting to slow down and were in need of a tune up. So it was with a great deal of interest (not to mention hope) that I installed TuneUp Utilities 2009 on both machines.

I first reviewed Magic Audio Cleaner some years ago when writing for a print computer magazine. At the time one of the biggest uses for audio editing programs was cleaning up “pops” and “clicks” from recordings taken from vinyl records (remember those?), and Audio Cleaner did the job superbly.

For some time my PC was ludicrously slow, and Outlook 2003 seemed to have something to do with it. Outlook would take forever to download email, and it would often crash, prompting even more delays when it decided to “Check my Personal file” because it was not closed properly. Arrghhhhh!

Need to convert AVI, MPG, MOV video files to FLV or SWF format – but don’t want to pay for a utility? I was recently asked by a client to upload a number of Quicktime (.mov) videos to his website. In order to do this I needed to convert the Quicktime files to the Flash FLV format. I’m pleased to say that I was able to find a free utility that did an excellent job.

Well 2008 didn’t quite turn out as anyone had hoped. The sub-prime debt crisis turned into the global financial crisis (or GFC as it’s now called), and in an astonishing turn of events, the economic good times came to a screaming halt. Much of the world is in recession, and those parts that aren’t, will probably slide into recession in 2009.

I’ve been a bit skeptical about products like Norton Internet Security after a bad experience last year, when a previous edition* of this venerable security suite made my computer all but unusable. The computer slowed right down and Outlook became very unstable.

CD/DVD authoring software was once the domain of computer nerds and pirates, but this latest version of Nero has its sights set firmly on the mainstream. It’s clearly positioned as a tool for the whole family with an array of “multimedia” features. It’s actually a multimedia suite than simply a CD/DVD authoring system.
