Review- System Mechanic does its job well

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Review - System Mechanic does its job well System Mechanic by iolo technologies cleans your memory, your hard drive and your registry speeding up your computer as it works.  Cleaning and tuning is what this program was designed to do and it does it well.  It is better than other such programs I have tried from better known names.

Review: TuneUp Utilities 2009 – tune up and speed up your Windows PC

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Review: TuneUp Utilities 2009 – tune up and speed up your Windows PC Almost everyone with a Windows PC suffers slow down after a certain amount of time. It’s one of the most frustrating things about running a PC with Windows, and when I received a review copy of TuneUp Utilities 2009 I happened to have two PCs – an older desktop and a more modern notebook* – that were both starting to slow down and were in need of a tune up. So it was with a great deal of interest (not to mention hope) that I installed TuneUp Utilities 2009 on both machines.

Review: Magic Audio Cleaner 15 – audio editing and enhancement

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Review: Magic Audio Cleaner 15 – audio editing and enhancement I first reviewed Magic Audio Cleaner some years ago when writing for a print computer magazine. At the time one of the biggest uses for audio editing programs was cleaning up “pops” and “clicks” from recordings taken from vinyl records (remember those?), and Audio Cleaner did the job superbly.

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Review: Toshiba Protégé R600 – leanest, greenest ultra notebook? Billed as the world’s greenest notebook we looked forward to reviewing the Toshiba Protégé R600 “ultra-portable”. But as is usually the case with such claims, things weren’t quite as they seemed.

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

A guide to the best free antivirus softwareWondering what the best free antivirus software is? There’s a myriad of questions most people have when trying to figure out the best antivirus software, especially ones that are free.  While some maintain that no free antivirus software works as well as the robust (and expensive) alternatives, there are several great options for both Mac and PC that perform as well or better then their pricey brethren.

Review: Advent 4211-B netbook – small, useful, affordable

There is a lot of publicity surrounding the new smaller-sized notebooks, sometimes called the Netbooks. Does it work in real life and should you consider buying one? Is my Advent 4211-B netbook truly usable?

which Blackberry flagship should you captain?Research in Motion (RIM) has been a beehive of activity as of late, releasing a veritable cornucopia of handsets to appeal to a wide range of consumers with different needs. Review: Samsung i900 Omnia a contender, but won’t knock iPhone out of top spot

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Judging the Samsung Omnia based on looks alone, you are almost forced to compare it to the iPhone. It has taken its look and feel almost exactly from the iPhone model of cell phone design. The wide, glossy touch screen offers a lot of acreage for use, but much of that acreage is lost in the incessant popping-up of the “keyboard” interface and the odd Samsung menu strip on the home page.

Review: Western Digital Passport USB drive – how to get past format and write errors

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

When I needed a bigger better backup solution for about 120 gigabytes of photo, video, and Web design data, I finally decided on the Western Digital Passport 320 GB USB drive. It offered a great combination of speed, size, convenience, and price. I purchased the drive through an online retailer for $165.99, just over 50 cents per megabyte. The drive did not function properly upon receipt, but I was able to resolve the problem, and the drive turned out to be a great answer for my backup needs.

Review: Atek’s Logio password keeper is a great idea poorly executed

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Atek's Logio password keeper is a great idea poorly executed Passwords are an important part of maintaining the security of information on computers and the Internet.  Security experts will tell you that you need to use passwords that are not easy to guess, do not include your birth date, your name or the birth dates or names of family members.  In other words, for passwords to be effective, they need to be difficult to remember.

Review: Atek’s OnBoard Travel Keyboard works great with notebooks

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Review: Atek's OnBoard Travel Keyboard works great with notebooks Most laptop computers have smaller keyboards than a standard desktop keyboard especially the new sub-notebooks.  When switching between a desktop and laptop computer, many people have trouble with the smaller keyboards and the lack of a dedicated numeric keypad.  Atek has taken care of that with its new travel keyboard.
