The Mobile Muster mobile phone recycling scheme in Australia has been slammed by the Total Environment Centre (TEC), who said the industry-run voluntary recycling program is ‘pathetic’, having failed to boost recycling recovery rate beyond 3%.

Up until last week Englishman Anthony Smith was an upcoming online casino mogul. He’d spent almost $US4000 and thousands of hours setting up “Casino World” on Second Life, and all revenues generated by his online casino were being reinvested back into his business.

Microsoft’s vice president, Satya Nadella, in an interview with Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet, may have slipped some information about Microsoft Works 9.0. The new version is said to be free, funded by advertisements.

The recent corporate buzz over whether to offer Linux-based machines or not has raised quite an uproar in the open-source community; now you can tack on another turncoat to the list. Acer has officially announced it will not be releasing Linux-based machines…at least in the UK, because there is “no demand” for it.

Just when you thought it was safe to buy an HD DVD player, the Japanese porn industry decides to go exclusive Blu-ray, leaving the real winner of the format war to ultimately be determined by which adult movies, U.S. or Japanese, raises more … eyebrows.

Many believe (foolishly) that large social networking site MySpace, which allows users and artists to play their favorite songs on their pages, keeps users from downloading what they can go to MySpace and hear. Not so; in fact a recent survey by Entertainment Media Research revealed that nearly half of all social networking site users partake in illegal downloading of music.

To avoid the dangers of any and all lawsuits, YouTube is working to develop software that will aim to end copyright infringing once and for all on the popular video sharing site. Google, YouTube’s parent company, hopes to have the system up and running by September.

Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales, has been going on and on about plans for his new search engine, Wikia Search, for nearly a year; we were pretty excited when we first heard the news about the formerly named Wikiasari search engine. But Wikiasari is long out the window, and has been under development for so long that Mr. Wales seems to have forgot what the search engine was supposed to be all about - the people.

After winning over Target and Blockbuster stores, Blu-ray gains another ally: BJ’s Wholesale Club. With only one studio behind HD DVD exlusively and no big-name retail exclusives, HD DVD may see its demise in the coming months as predicted by Sony’s Peter Dille.
