Toshiba cooking up upconverting “super-dvd” to best Blu-Ray
Saturday, May 31st, 2008
It isn’t news that Sony’s Blu-Ray has bested Toshiba’s HD-DVD video format a while ago, and it certainly isn’t news that Toshiba is reeling from the defeat. But I don’t think anyone could have predicted that Toshiba would pull its beaten and bloodied self together and make another affront to Blu-Ray; Toshiba plans to release a “super” DVD player, an upscaling format that promises to deliver Blu-Ray definition out of normal DVDs for quite a few bucks less.

Capturing the energy inherent in tides and waves has been the goal of many different countries and companies over the last few years. Most of the devices require some ability to float or even fly above the surface of the ocean but BioPower has created the bioStream and bioWave that work anchored to the sea bed.

Imagine a gasoline from renewable resources rather than finite oil fields. That is exactly what a San-Diego, California start up has done. Not only is algae good for adding to power drinks, it is now a source of power for cars.

Friday, May 30th, 2008
Though just about everyone these days can get their hands on a digital video recorder (DVR) of some sort nowadays, there are a few that still want to claim a piece of everyone’s pie, or so it seems. TiVo was arguably the first company to distribute DVR, and it sued Dish for copying its idea…but Dish doesn’t like that and is now suing TiVo back.

GM just announced that 19,000 of its hourly workers in the United States chose to accept buyout offers with various options. The company will replace those leaving with fewer, lower paid workers. Thursday, May 29th, 2008
Microsoft has established quite a reputation by domineering the operating system industry and pressuring other players out. It seems that one way the company is maintaining that foothold is by throttling access to its MSDN network, making it difficult for Linux users to download files inside the system.
Media giants hire MediaDefender to hack torrent servers
Thursday, May 29th, 2008
Though the battle between media protection groups like the RIAA and filesharers on peer-to-peer networks isn’t anything new, it seems that media groups have sank so low that they are now hiring seedy companies like MediaDefender to attack torrent indexing sites’ servers, even if those sites aren’t indexing illegal content. Evidence now seems to show that MediaDefender attacked popular site Revision3, and the FBI is going to get involved.
Dell’s 8.9-inch EeePC killer arrives as "mini-Inspiron"
Thursday, May 29th, 2008
We’ve been waiting for it and here it is, Dell’s 8.9-inch mini laptop dubbed the “mini-Inspiron” which sadly shares a similar design. I’m not a fan of the Inspiron design, they’re bulky, fat and ugly, I liked the previous designs better like that of the Inspiron M1710 and earlier E-series models. Though, the mini-Inspiron looks… okay.
Mozilla goes for Guinness World Record using FireFox 3 release on Download Day
Thursday, May 29th, 2008
I have been using the FireFox Release Candidate 1 test program for a while now, and I like it – well, most of it. It is missing a few key features and plugins for me that I had grown used to, but it looks more like the beautiful Safari, while still offering the function of FireFox, so I’ve been happy. Mozilla is banking on the happiness of its loyal users to get it to the top of the Guinness World Record books this summer.
