The $200 million Facebook wall post

February 6, 2012

The big news of last week was the announcement of Facebook’s initial public offering (IPO) and the 1,000-plus soon to be minted millionaires that will result. Perhaps the most unlikely of these is David Choe, the guy that took options in lieu of payment for a bawdy wall mural he painted in Facebook’s previous headquarters some years back.

Let’s play Phone Stack and enjoy our dinner

February 5, 2012

Let's play Phone Stack and enjoy our dinnerBeing addicted to your cell phone is not uncommon.  Many of us have a hard time not playing with our phones even when enjoying a dinner out with friends.  Just the other night, a friend of mine stopped in mid sentence to answer her phone.  That doesn’t include the number of times she answered text messages while we were eating.  My phone was dead or I probably would have been right there with her.  Enter a new game called Phone Stack that is liable to cost one of us some money.

Android users get busy in bathroom

February 1, 2012

Here’s a powerful realization for you to act upon — if you don’t take your expensive, absolutely life critical smartphone into the bathroom, it can’t fall into the toilet. Seriously, keep your business out of your business. That said, though iPhone owners are somewhat less likely to diddle in the loo, smartphone users overwhelmingly aren’t giving it a break when they go to the restroom.

Now who’s biggest? Apple blows by HP

January 25, 2012

Whoa, nelly. Previously, analysts predicted that Apple’s Mac + iPad computers sales would make it the world’s largest “PC” vendor sometime within the first six months of 2012. So much for those rosy expectations — who thought that the Cupertino, California company would double tablet sales last quarter.

Crap singer unveils crap robot at CES 2012

January 12, 2012

There have been a few trends emerging at CES. One of which is the celebrity endorsement. Justin Bieber is surely the perfect choice to unveil an ugly piece of garbage that flails its arms and legs while trying to emit a song or two.

Money? We don’t need your stinking money

January 7, 2012

So, you’ve created a startup with a great product and you want to grow the business and you need money — then it’s time to find a venture capitalist to get funding, right? Actually, not necessarily. A British entrepreneur has done it all old school, expanding into three countries with scores of employees, with sweat equity.

File-sharing an official religion, in Sweden

January 4, 2012

Sweden is either a forward-thinking country or a country where any crackpot can get a new religion officially recognized. It all depends on your point of view.

Wendi Deng Twitter fake gets verified

January 3, 2012

Twitter seriously needs to rethink its account verification policy, whatever that policy may be. Otherwise more Wendi Deng-style fakes will sneak through.

RIM’s latest irrational Playbook moment

January 3, 2012

When Research in Motion started selling their tablet, they declared that “amateur hour” was over. Never mind that the Playbook didn’t then and still doesn’t have native email, calendar and contact apps. Since then things have gone from bad to worse as sales tanked and inventories built. But don’t think their foolishness is over.

Java ME-powered dumb phones overtake Android

January 1, 2012

Here is a theme that just keeps coming up again and again that begs an in depth examination. “Smartphones” running some older, often jurassic version of Android – how many devices offer Ice Cream Sandwich? — just aren’t showing up in web metrics, mobile commerce or otherwise generating the kind of data that oozes money.

British police need lessons on what not to do on Facebook

December 31, 2011

British police need lessons on what not to do on FacebookPeople getting fired over what they put on Facebook is nothing new.  Since its inception there have been people who haven’t quite figured out that you have to use discretion when posting.  Apparently a large group of officers in the UK police need a little refresher course on common sense.

Verizon axes ‘convenience charge’

December 30, 2011

This little tidbit comes from the bass-ackwards school of business where the customer is stupid and exploitable until proven otherwise. That said, Verizon didn’t get to get to be the largest wireless and wireline carrier in these oddly dysfunctional United States by knowing when to quit, so gird your loins Joe and Jane Sixpack — they will be back.

A letter to Santa Claus on greening up his sleigh

December 24, 2011

Santa and sleighDear Santa,

Louis CK makes million, gives it away

December 23, 2011

First, he surprised everyone by not going with a studio partner and then not losing money. Having crushed those expectations in a big way, Louis CK has again upset the capitalist apple cart by taking his stash o’ cash and giving it to his employees and charity. Is this guy an effing commie, or what?

Clever thieves steal dumb stuff

December 19, 2011

A crew of criminals executed a well planned electronics heist — they tailed the driver of tractor trailer to a truck stop where confederates were watching, surreptitiously hauled the trailer away to a location where another truck was waiting and got away. The only problem is that they stole a bunch of “tablets.”

Send a letter or phone call from Santa to your favorite child this holiday season

December 18, 2011

Send a letter or phone call from Santa to your favorite child this holiday seasonFor all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends, Google has created an easy way for you to make sure that the children in your family get a phone call from Santa.  Yes, the messages are limited and somewhat canned, but for a free service and a little smile from the kids your life, it’s not so bad.  There are also some other services that will send letters and postcards to your little ones as well.

Louis CK is making ‘shitloads of money’

December 14, 2011

More 18,000 Likes and 11,000 Tweets for a media product not created by a big media company. The really, really cool thing about this story is the math underpinning it is easily understandable and, moreover, numbers of this size aren’t beyond what an average person can imagine. Is this enough to kill Universal, Warner or Sony? Probably not, but it’s good news nonetheless.
