The Nook and the Kindle will both have new models this Spring or Summer if the rumor mill is correct. According to some, Amazon is working on a new nine inch version and Barnes & Noble (B&N) is working on a new device of its own while the tablet that both are trying to compete with, the Apple iPad will be announcing it’s newest iteration next month.

A lot of people are all agog at Apple’s new iBooks Author App. Don’t be. Self publishing software has been around for awhile. Not only has it been around it has been used and is being used successfully to publish books that can be sold for more devices than just Apple’s. Rather than rushing headlong into software that will limit where your book can be read, look around and try out a few different programs.

Successful tech products usually meet two criteria: they involve a solution that while technically complex to carry out, is based on a simple concept; and they solve a genuine problem, even if the marketing team sometimes have to make customers aware of the problem. SolarKindle is halfway there.

Pop quiz — what’s the closest bookstore to where you live and are you sure it’s still there? Borders stores nationwide are either closing or just plain gone, and the reasons for the extinction are unmistakable: the economy (still) sucks and ebooks are growing by leaps and bounds.

As the Supreme Court said in it’s Citizen’s United opinion, corporations are people too and obviously they can exhibit the same behavior. In a “cut off your nose to spite your face” move, Barnes and Noble has removed copies of DC comics and graphic novels from it’s shelves because Amazon has an exclusive deal on the digital versions for its Kindle.

Let’s get the easy parts out of the way — the new Kindle line will succeed and the $79 model, in particular, must have publishers poohing themselves. However, I’m pretty sure Apple will continue to succeed with the iPad as Amazon’s going for a different market.

There was a time when the Razr was the hottest selling cellphone (OK, feature phone). And, although the Motorola Droid kicked off the Android revolution, the company’s smartphone sales today are anything but exciting. Here’s an interesting question, “Why do you have an eBook reader?” Simple, I know. You probably said to read books. But what does reading a book mean? Is it reading the printed page and looking at illustrations or has it become something more? That is the question that new enhanced eBooks raise.

If you wanna drain your smartphone’s precious juice(s), go somewhere with a high density of Wi-Fi hotspots, connect and download video. In other words, you’ll get battery performance download via Wi-Fi in a Midwestern farmhouse than, say, the middle of Manhattan.

Manufacturers have been working on flexible displays for eReaders, tablets, and phones for at least six years now. There have been foldable or rollable eReaders or phones promised at various different technology conferences but these devices have never made it to market. Now companies like Polymer Vision, Human Media Lab and Bridgestone are showing off new technologies that they claim will be available within the next year or two.
