The big news of last week was the announcement of Facebook’s initial public offering (IPO) and the 1,000-plus soon to be minted millionaires that will result. Perhaps the most unlikely of these is David Choe, the guy that took options in lieu of payment for a bawdy wall mural he painted in Facebook’s previous headquarters some years back.

In 2005, Facebook commissioned an artist to paint murals at its headquarters and cheekily offered to pay him in company stock rather than cash. They somehow persuaded him to take the stock: that decision means he’ll soon be worth around $200 million.

People getting fired over what they put on Facebook is nothing new. Since its inception there have been people who haven’t quite figured out that you have to use discretion when posting. Apparently a large group of officers in the UK police need a little refresher course on common sense.

Facebook claims that its helped reduce the famed “six degrees of separation” between any two people to an average of just 4.74. That sounds great as long as you ignore the 89 percent or so of the world that isn’t on Facebook.

It appears Facebook is close to agreeing a major settlement with the Federal Trade Commission that would overturn the most annoying part of its privacy policy: the way that it makes changes and then waits for users to put settings back to normal.

There are several reports today that a survey of teen internet users suggests overall, everything’s just dandy. The problem is this is based on a single vague and uninformative question, and the rest of the results show cyberbullying is at least as bad as you’d expect.
