China has launched ten satellites that will make up a geo-positioning network designed as an alternative to GPS. While compatible with existing technology, Beidou is intended to make sure China isn’t reliant on foreign systems.

The vast frontier of the Internet is not as vast as we may think. When we click on favorite websites or search for specific information, we may not be seeing what others who visit the same website and do the same search are seeing. Part of that is because of tracking cookies and part of that is due to Internet filters that sift through all the results available and choose what we get to see. In other words, the “personalization” of our web experience by news sites, advertisers and even social media sites are skewing what information we receive.

In December of 2009, Microsoft signed an agreement with European Union regulators to offer European customers improved access to rival browsers. Apparently it is beginning to pay off for a couple of Internet Explorer (IE) rivals. Mozilla’s Firefox had top market share by December of last year.

Google has quietly (at least until now) built up a small fleet of Toyota Prius passenger cars and modified them to drive without the aid of human beings, though there are always some there anyway.

NAVTEQ has decided to aid those of us who really are bad at judging distances. You can say something is X feet or yards away but that just doesn’t help. So for those of us who can’t tell 20 feet from 20 yards, NAVTEQ will be giving us directions in every day terms.

Time Inc has been plagued by declining subscription revenue and layoffs, so it’s taking a new tact with its magazine content by testing a tablet-friendly version of Sports Illustrated. While the concept is promising, it won’t solve Time’s immediate problems.
