So the recent scoop is that the newly ousted Senator from Rhode Island is gonna put a D behind his name. And I’ll predict right now that one of the most liberal Republicans in the Senate WILL turn into a Dem…but he shouldn’t. He should join a new party: the true conservative party.
Confused? Don’t be. All will be explained shortly…
But first…The Boston Globe:
“I haven’t made any decisions. I just haven’t even thought about where my place is,” Chafee said at a news conference Thursday when asked whether he would stick with the Republican Party or switch to be an independent or Democrat.
When asked if his comments meant he thought he might not belong in the Republican Party, he replied: “That’s fair.” […]
When asked whether he felt that his loss may have helped the country by switching control of power in Congress, he replied: “To be honest, yes.”
Yep, he’s gonna go donkey, but I honestly think it would be better if he stuck to his roots and built a new party based around the aforementioned true conservatism. And as we now can see…the party of Goldwater has almost disappeared because it tried too hard to appeal to a devout base. This will ultimately destroy the Republican party because many of our current GOPers are not true conservatives. They are something else…perhaps Theocons is appropriate?
Given that, Chafee could be a vital voice for a new Republican party, and the evidence for such a movement is evident and growing. Just look at Christie Todd Whitman’s organization It’s My Party Too, which seeks fiscal sanity and personal freedom over the cynical religious politics of the current Repub leadership.
Seriously, take a glance at the organizations backing her PAC. They’re impressively grounded in the realities of today, and I applaud their efforts to bring back some needed centrism to the GOP.
But if I were a betting man, my money would that Chafee goes blue. Too bad honestly…Lincolns should always be Republicans.
