Rudy is the new straight talker. No doubt about it.
Giuliani made his sharpest case for moving beyond social issues this weekend in Iowa, telling The Des Moines Register, “Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we’re for, not if we’re a party that’s known for what we’re against.”
Asked about abortion, he said, “Our party has to get beyond issues like that.”
The GOP and the modern conservative movement have always prided themselves on being the idea people. Rudy wants to regain that and capture the nation’s imagination.
Good for him, but easier said than done. He’s going to have a tough time convincing the social issues voters that he won’t abandon their fight to overturn Roe v. Wade.
I guess we’ll see if his tune is the same come January of next year.
