One of the “not really a story” stories circulating today is that John McCain has launched his first Facebook application. Yeah, I know, exciting stuff.

But what grabbed me in the story was this little factoid: On Facebook, Barack Obama has 1,000,400 supporters while John McCain has 147,000. This tells me two things: 1) Obama has done a far better job leveraging Web 2.0 technology and 2) McCain’s supporters are less likely to use Facebook.

What I don’t know is if this is a real advantage for Obama. Certainly, his superior organizational abilities helped him win the Democratic nomination, but can Facebook and like technologies be a difference maker in the broader general election? We’ll see.
