Later today, John McCain will unveil a new stump speech designed to hit the reset button on his campaign. Here’s an excerpt released to the press:

The national media has written us off. Sen. Obama is measuring the drapes and planning with Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Reid to raise taxes, increase spending, take away your right to vote by secret ballot in labor elections and concede defeat in Iraq. But they forgot to let you decide. My friends, we’ve got them just where we want them.

Yep, being down 5 to 10 points in the polls has always been the plan.

With only three weeks before the election. I think it’s probably too late to refocus the McCain campaign, especially since yet another shift in strategy will undoubtedly be used by Obama supporters as more proof that the Arizona senator is erratic. No amount of refocusing of strategy can erase the mistakes of the last month or take the voters’ minds off the economy.

We’ll see the full extent of this “refocusing” later today. But the excerpt doesn’t lead me to believe that McCain has hit on a magic strategy to resurrect his campaign.
