On the fiftieth anniversary of “Time Out,” the first million-selling jazz album -– which introduced “Take Five” to the world — jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck – whom the Library of Congress has designated a “Living Legend” — will be at the Apple Store in Soho on Tuesday, July 21st talking about the importance of 1959 in the history of jazz. The store promises music too, which I hope means Brubeck, who’s nearly 90, will play. (But on what?)
davebrubeckquartetJust for the record (or, since it’s an Apple store, for the iTune), Brubeck’s musical partner alto saxophonist Paul Desmond wrote “Take Five”; Brubeck only played it as part of the Dave Brubeck Quartet — Brubeck, Desmond, Joe Morello on drums, and Eugene Wright on bass.
